I am currently Assistant Professor of Data Science at the Department of Mathematics at CUNY College of Staten Island, as well as Deputy Executive Officer (Deputy Chair) of the Computer Science / Data Science programme at the CUNY Graduate Center.

I did my PhD in computational group cohomology at the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, and then continued with a postdoc in Gunnar Carlsson's group at Stanford. After leaving Stanford in 2011, I have been a postdoc at the University of St Andrews in the GAP group, at KTH in CAS/CVAP and at the AI Laboratory of the Jozef Stefan Institute. Since I started at Stanford, I have been active in persistent homology and topological data analysis. I participated in the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications' year on applied topology 2013-2014, and I am on the coordinating committee for the ATMCS series of applied topology conferences.

In the links to the right, you can find links to my current Curriculum
Vitae, my Publication List, recent and upcoming lectures, and to some videos.

I have had some media coverage of a preprint on formal languages and
enumerating novel types of necktie knots. I have collected most
features on my website on tieknots.
